Understanding and planning for severe storms in the Kingston/New Paltz areas

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Having a plan in place for severe weather will help more than you know in an emergency situation.

We have all been dealing with some pretty good storms recently in the New Paltz, Hurley and Kingston locales that have had the potential to cause damage to homes, property and daily life. It’s essential to understand the jargon, be prepared ahead of time and have a solid plan for your family.

-It’s important to have an emergency kit ready to go and a strong plan in place for evacuating, meeting up, staying put, electric issues, etc. Discuss these ideas with your family often. It’s also helpful to have small notebooks made up for each emergency plan and keep them throughout the home where everyone can grab quickly.

For outside the residence, make sure to:

-Bring any loose furniture, planters, toys, and yard décor that could be uprooted or thrown around in a storm.

-Cut or tie down and limbs or dead branches that could pose a hazard when high winds come through. Trees can do a lot of damage to a home; even smaller branches can be hazardous.

**If you happen to get caught in a severe storm when you’re in your vehicle- STAY INSIDE the car (not a convertible with a soft top), a home or building until the threat is over.

Here’s some clarity on severe weather definitions from the National Severe Storms Laboratory:

*A Severe Thunderstorm WATCH is issued by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center meteorologists who are watching the weather 24/7 across the entire U.S. for weather conditions that are favorable for severe thunderstorms. A watch can cover parts of a state or several states. Watch and prepare for severe weather and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio to know when warnings are issued.

*A Severe Thunderstorm WARNING mean there is a serious threat to life and property to those in the path of the storm. ACT NOW to find safe shelter! A warning can cover parts of counties or several counties in the path of danger. Tuning in to the NOAA Weather Station on your radio, phone or tv can be of great use and give you ample time to prepare.
