Ways That Storms Can Cause Flood Damage to Your Rosendale Home

6/21/2021 (Permalink)

A basement of a home with several feet of water in it, surround a washer and dryer as well as the home's main utility areas. Be informed about flooding and it's damages even when you don't live in a flood-prone area!

Areas that are situated in floodplains have long been aware of how much danger flooding can cause, but for those in other areas, it is not typically thought of as a large concern. Unfortunately, the frequency of flooding continues to rise due to a number of factors, meaning it’s important for every homeowner in Ulster County to understand the risks involved.

Many scenarios can cause flooding, and no two floods are the same. However, we have had experience mitigating and restoring numerous flood-damaged homes, allowing us to develop a solid understanding of the typical types of damage they cause to houses. In order to help you prepare, please see these damages below.

Damages to Homes from Flooding:

-Foundational Damage. A house’s foundation is planted and built firmly on the soil below it, which is generally sturdy. However, when this soil becomes waterlogged due to a flood, it can cause irregular shifting in the foundation, leading to cracks, uneven flooring and other damages. Over time, cracks get worse and can lead to leaking inside the basement or crawlspace as well as mold growth.

-Drywall Damage and Mold. Drywall that has been in contact with floodwaters should always be replaced. Mold can begin growing quickly behind drywall, usually within 48 hours, and if it is left untreated, excessive secondary damages can occur that may or may not be covered by your homeowner’s insurance.

-Insulation Saturation. When the drywall becomes soaked through, the home’s insulation can become soaked as well. Because insulation is so absorbent, it will lose effectiveness and encourage mold growth if left unrestored. That insulation needs to be removed, the framing dried out and treated and then fresh materials will have to be put in before new sheetrock goes up.

-Temporary Frame Swelling. A lumber house frame is typically quite durable when it comes to flood damage. Though some swelling may occur as the wood becomes saturated with water, once it is thoroughly cleaned and dried, it will typically go back to its original construction.

-Appliance Ruining. The appliances that have insulation in them are vulnerable to water damage because of the possibility that the insulation becomes soaked through. Though not all appliances are constructed this way, it is best to have an expert provide an inspection and determine what is the safest course of action. If any appliances like your refrigerator/freezer, washer or dryer and dishwasher have been sitting in standing water, you’ll need a professional appliance repair company or the manufacturer to help determine if they are repairable.

-Furniture Damage. Depending on the type of furniture, it may have to be replaced after coming into any kind of contact with floodwaters. Mattresses, couches and other upholstered pieces are often impossible to use safely after a flood. Soft contents, porous materials and the like absorb bacteria just like a sponge and it’s not recommended those items be kept. Fortunately, wood and metal furniture will usually be safe after being cleaned and dried professionally to prevent mold growth.
