It is so important to take proper care of your home in order to preserve its longevity, especially when it comes to preventing water damage from compounding. Water damage can cause unsightly cosmetic issues, but it can also lead to serious structural damage throughout the home.

Doing your own water damage checks is a great way to catch any damage early on so you can get a professional team out to remedy it. This will lessen the damages caused and the overall cost associated with restoration, too.

Doing a Water Damage Check in Your Home

Inspect your walls and ceilings. Drywall panels are designed to hide all the “bones” of a house from view, but they can also hide water damage that could damage the structural integrity of the house, too. Check for signs of peeling paint, bubbles on the surface or soft, swollen spots, as this might be a sign that water damage is under the surface.

Don’t forget to look down. When your home’s floor is laid, it will be put on top of a subfloor to support it structurally over the years. However, the subfloor can absorb moisture if there is a leak, swelling and causing issues with the cosmetic floor above. If you notice that your floors are uneven or pulling away from the walls in spots, that might be indicative of water damage.

Inspect your roof. If your roof is in good shape, it is equipped to do its job of keeping water damage out well. However, if there are loose shingles, raised spots of flashing or other wear and tear, water can quickly begin to work its way in. By going outside with a pair of binoculars, you can do an inspection from the ground to alert you to any potential issues.

Pay close attention to the basement. It was once a given that basements would be musty, but now, we know how detrimental this can be to your home. If you notice signs of water damage, such as indicators of water on the walls or floor or a general musty odor, it is advised to get it taken care of quickly.
