There are many things that can be dangerous regarding severe weather events in Ulster County.

The average severe thunderstorm can contain heavy rains, hail, lightning and high winds—any one of which can be scary, disorienting and cause serious damage to a home or business.

While there is nothing anyone can do in order to stop severe weather from occurring, we have always encouraged a preparedness mindset. No one can accurately predict what manner of damage a storm will do, but understanding its threats (such as high winds) and knowing how to prepare for them can make all the difference in your overall safety.

The Dangers of High Winds During Severe Weather-

High winds are defined as sustained winds at 40 miles per hour or more, which can be extremely intense. Here are some of the issues that high winds can present and how you can protect against them:

Objects Can Become Projectiles

Depending on the strength of the wind, almost any unsecured object outside can become a projectile. Think about outdoor toys, plant containers, pool and patio furniture, grills and firewood can all be picked up and moved considerable distances, which poses a risk for any home or property in the object’s path, whether yours or your neighbors. Bring in any small, loose items before a large storm, and secure any larger outdoor objects with weights or tie downs so they do not get picked up.

Downed Trees and Power Lines

High Winds can easily blow over trees, power lines and pull down transformer boxes if the force is correctly applied, all which can be extremely scary. While there is not much you can do regarding power poles on your street, trimming back any overgrown trees and have any weakened or dead ones removed so they are less of a liability. Downed trees that are pulling on power lines can quickly pull the electrical boxes right off your house as well (if you have one directly connected). The local electric provider is responsible for this trimming but certainly call Central Hudson if you notice a potential problem.

Secure EVERY Door and Window

Making sure all doors and windows are closed and latched is something that can be easily forgotten, but is so important. Broken glass is extremely hazardous, and if a window or a door is not properly sealed, water damage can become a secondary hazard after the storm passes.
