A large hole in the kitchen ceiling showing exposed framing and ripped sheetrock stemming from water damage above it. There are plenty of ways for water damage to surprise you but being diligent and aware will go a long way in the end!

Generally, when we discuss moisture damage to homes, we are talking about damage from incidents such as flooding or burst plumbing pipes—but it is important to remember that moisture damage can occur in a variety of ways. Just because you do not have a major water damage event such as these does not mean you are immune, and it is important to stay vigilant against moisture working its way into places it should not be.

Fortunately, knowing what to look for can go a long way and help in avoiding secondary issues. If you’re watching out for water damage and catching it early on, it’s key to a smooth and simple restoration process.

Places to Watch for Water Damage in Your Home

-Around Doors and Windows

While your home may appear to be impervious to the weather, if your seals around the windows and doors leading to your exterior are even slightly damaged, water can begin to work its way in. This will often be evident by discoloration or peeling paint around the frame, which will often get worse when it rains. These exterior seals should be caulked regularly to seal any gaps and keep out any moisture for good.

-Under Any Appliances

Washing machines and dishwashers don’t get moved often, but they are also often sources of leaks in the home. It is important to check under and behind these appliances (as well as any others that utilize water) frequently in order to catch any leaks early on instead of letting them get worse with time.

-In the Ceiling Under Bathrooms

If you have bathrooms on multiple floors of your home, it is important that you are aware of which part of your ceiling is directly under them so you can watch for any leaks to develop. While these leaks are notoriously hard to catch, watching for them carefully can help you be aware of them early on. Look for any sagging, spots or chipped paint directly under where the shower, toilet and sink are located, in case any of the pipes within the walls are leaking.
