Get Your Saugerties Home Ready for Whatever Winter Brings!

Snow and icicles hanging from the gutters on a home Don't get caught in a water damage situation, prep your home for whatever winter may bring!

We never know what Mother Nature might do in the winter months, we could have 40 degree days and some minor snow fall or we could have blizzard conditions a few times and negative degree days a week at a time. Either way, take the time now to get your home prepped for whatever winter brings. Weather extremes can lead to water damage, roof damage, broken pipes & ice damming.

SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz wants to make sure you are prepped, have the info and know what to do in case you’re faced with a damage situation.

Top Tips for Preparing your Home for Winter Weather-

  • When temps dip below 20 degrees, or the “temperature alert threshold,” keep cabinet and closet doors open to allow heat to circulate in. Especially true in attics, basements and garages. If possible, purchase some pipe insulation material from a hardware store. It’s inexpensive and easy to do.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets, especially if the pipes for faucets run through unheated or uninsulated areas of the home.
  • Shut off outdoor faucets. Find the shutoff valve in the basement or crawl space and turn it to "off". If you follow the previous step, then open the outdoor faucet to help ensure it drains completely and the inner valve is shutoff.
  • Ensure gutters are clean and secure. Leaves and debris accumulate, causing a damming effect on gutters, which could lead to roof problems and water damage.
  • Have your hot water heater inspected as they also can leak if not properly maintained.
  • Proper maintenance of your furnace can help reduce the risk of puff-backs
  • Have your roof and attic inspected for any leaks or damage. Unknown leaks can cause secondary damage like mold and structural issues. Needing a roof repair or replacement is not something you want to deal with in the winter months.
