Steps to Making Your Kingston Business Workplace Safety Drill Actually Work

8/4/2023 (Permalink)

If you are a manager or a business owner in Ulster County, you understand how important it is to keep your workplace free of hazards and your employees safe from harm during their work day. But have you considered what would happen in an emergency?

Because of how negatively a disaster can impact a small business, it is important to create a plan for what to do should an emergency occur. Creating a plan that accounts for multiple possibilities, gathering honest feedback and then using that to improve are all important components to creating with a fool-proof plan.

Here’s how business owners can begin creating a solid workplace safety drill:

1.    Plan Your Drill

To create a properly executed drill, it is important to plan it thoroughly and well in advance to ensure it is as effective as possible. Be sure to plan for every scenario that could put your staff in harms’ way, such as fires, storm damage, power outages or any other emergency that could be specific to your industry. Prepare for specific points such as:

  • Determining a meeting point outside of and away from the building
  • Designating someone to perform a headcount and ensure that everyone in the building participates
  • How to perform any emergency shutdown procedures, like as turning off machinery before exiting the building
  • Understanding and able to handle software backup and important document handling

It’s also important to schedule drills at various times if you have personnel who work a variety of hours so everyone is able to experience them and provide critical feedback no matter the time of day.

2.    Determine Where to Improve

After performing safety drills, the most important thing to do is take note of where improvements could be made. Even things that seem small can make a big difference in an emergency scenario, such as more lighting or better signage. Solicit feedback from employees on how the drill could improve to get further ideas.

3.    Make Changes and Repeat

As you continue to make improvements and run drills, it is important to note how more recent drills compare with earlier ones. Technology upgrades, building infrastructure changes, employee turnover, and even small changes are important to note for yearly improvements or revisions. Tracking the improvements that are made and the outcome of each round is a great way to ensure that drills are as efficient as they can be, that way everyone will stay safe should a real emergency occur.

If you’ve had an emergency occur at your business, we’re here for you! As experts in commercial damage restoration, SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz can handle fire, water or storm damage from any disaster. Here to help 24/7 with an emergency response!

Trust the Pros in Damage Restoration at your Kingston Business

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

Tons of SERVPRO green equipment lined up against the wall of a commercial building. Don't fall prey to a company who can't handle damage at your business. Call SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz, the leaders in commercial restoration.

Sometimes life throws a mess your way and out of nowhere, you’re dealing with flooding, sewage or fire and smoke damage at the Kingston business you’ve worked so hard to build.

No matter the cause, whether a heavy storm or an act of nature, chances are you might need to make a quick decision on who can help you get your home back to normal.

When you’re choosing a restoration partner to get your business back up and running, there are a few important questions that you should most definitely ask.

Is It a Legit Company?

Keep In Mind: Not everyone who shows up after a disaster is there with your best interest in mind. Often times, there are scammers who do nothing other than flee with your money. It’s unfortunate and happens every time there’s damage reported. Companies will show up promising everything but never having the experience or the credibility to handle everything you, your staff and your company needs to get back to normal.

As for credentials, experience, examples, what insurance companies are they affiliated with, can they handle a large commercial loss? These are great questions that will weed out those who aren't legitimate restoration companies.

With SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz as your partner in restoration, you can rest assured that we are no newcomers to this situation. We have been locally owned and operated in this industry for over 30 years, and have worked hard to earn a reputation that shows how we put our customers first.

We are also trusted by national brands like the PGA Tour. The PGA Tour accepts nothing less than high-quality service to maintain their facilities and tour stops. We have national account status with State Farm Insurance and many other insurance companies, no matter who the carrier is.

Additionally, our company is Large-Loss Certified, therefore, we have the staff, resources and equipment to handle any size disaster. Whether you have 500 or 500,000 sq. feet, we’ve got you covered and are here to help with an emergency response.

Can They Be Reached?

When disaster strikes your business, time is not on your side. You need to be assured that you have someone that you can contact at any given day or time.

That’s why we are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have a live staff ready to help no matter the time of day or holiday. We work hard so that you don’t have to and know that you need people that you can depend on.

Who Else Can Help?

But, unfortunately, there are times in which there is a surge of neighbors needing our help, and in that case, you can be confident that with a nationwide network of SERVPRO franchises to back us, we will still have you well taken care of.

When you call SERVPRO of Kingston/New Patlz, you can rest easy knowing your business has the trusted leader in the restoration industry on the other end of the line. When disaster hits home, contact us to get our local experts and nationwide network on your side.

Protect your New Paltz business from the harsh Ulster County Winters!

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

A carpeted hallway in a commercial building with several areas of water puddling. Make a solid plan every year to do all you can to keep your Ulster county commercial property, and it's tenants, safe in the winter months!

Even though there are some great weather forecasters out there, it can still be a hit or miss, especially in the winter months in Ulster County. We do know that living in Kingston, Saugerties, Kerhonkson, New Paltz, Highland or Woodstock has taught us to never underestimate the power of Mother Nature (ahem- Icemageddon on 2/4/22). Protecting your business or commercial property in the winter months is just as important as the winter preparations you do for your home.

Here are some of our best tips to help prepare your business for winter and the future, as well as to help give you some piece of mind:

-Check the external areas of the building or common areas for downed tree limbs and branches. Be especially mindful should you come across any stray roof shingles on the ground or anything else from the building that isn't right.

-Inspect the walkways and parking lots of your property for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazards, icing problems, trip/fall hazards, potholes and cracks and repairs needed to keep those areas free and clear (this is a good idea all year long). If needed, keep a bucket of rock salt located nearby. Repair dangerous areas immediately to avoid injuries.

-If you have a parking lot at your building, keep it free and clear of snow and ice, keep lots of salt handy and use it often. If you have a snow removal company, have them inspect and attend to any areas on a very regular basis. Parking lots are known to be prone to icing and frozen run off areas, keep the liability away!

-Check all handrails, stairwells and entry ways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present. Large orange cones can also be helpful in areas that need to be avoided for the time being. Water absorbing floor mats are especially helpful in doorways and entrances where ice, snow and water can collect.

-have the roof inspected yearly for any problems that could lead to leaks and have the gutters cleaned bi-annually.

-Eliminate any drafts with caulking or weather stripping, as gaps around windows and doors run up heating bills.

-Keep vacant areas heated on a low setting, 55 degrees is ideal and will help prevent pipes from freezing. Burst pipes have costly repercussions and can cause significant structural issues and potential mold growth. Flooding from burst pipes can affect other businesses in the building and cause them to stop operations until the remediation is complete, no business owner wants that.

-Don’t forget about outdoor watering systems, these need to be winterized properly as well. They could lead to frozen pipes as well at the building level.

-Consider hiring a facilities manager or property management company to help keep an eye on things for you, especially if you aren’t able to be at the property often or live out of state. They're a great way to have problems taken care of quickly in your absence.

The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it NOW. Ask SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business. It’s FREE and a great resource to have at your fingertips in case of a disaster.

If your commercial property suffers any kind of fire, water, sewage, storm or mold damage, we’re here to help 24/7. We’ll get you back to business quickly, "Like it never even happened." (845)255-4334.

What Business Owners Should Know About Frozen Pipes | SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz

12/15/2021 (Permalink)

A close up photo of part of an outdoor water pipe covered with icicles. Prepare your business or commercial property as best you can before frozen pipes cause a disaster!

Understanding the complexities and dangers of frozen pipes is a must for anyone who lives in a
climate where there are cold winters, but that is especially true for business owners in these areas of Ulster County. Frozen pipes are a serious threat to commercial property, and while they can often be remedied, it is much easier and cost effective to help prevent them from occurring in the first place.

If you are unsure how frozen pipes happen, how they cause damage and how they can be treated, keep reading! We have compiled together everything business owners should know about frozen pipes so you can keep your commercial property safe.

### Why Frozen Pipes Occur

While it is a common misconception that frozen pipes are only an issue when the weather turns
bitterly cold, the truth is, they can happen any time the temperature falls under 32 degrees
Fahrenheit. If pipes are not insulated well enough and holding still water, they can quickly freeze
and become blocked.

### How Frozen Pipes Cause Damage

While a pipe freezing does not cause damage itself, it can lead to the pipe bursting, which can
cause serious issues. When there is a blockage in the pipe (in this case, ice), the water behind
the blockage has nowhere to go.

Eventually, this can overwhelm the material the pipe is made of and lead to a burst, which means
there will be an outpouring of water from the weakened area.

### What to Do if You Find a Frozen Pipe

If there is a frozen pipe in your commercial business, whether it be residential or any type,  you may be able to remedy the situation. Making the area around the pipe warmer can thaw the ice inside, preventing a burst from occurring.

### How to Prevent a Frozen Pipe

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent pipes from freezing in the first place. Insulating pipes
during the winter, keeping the heat on in your building even when your business is not operational and turning on faucets to a trickle during any extreme cold spells can all significantly reduce the likelihood that a pipe will burst in your business.

*If you experience water damage due to a burst pipe or any other cause in your commercial space, SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz can help! We're available 24/7 for any property damage emergency with local water damage restoration pros on standby!

A Quick Guide to Implementing Fire Evacuation Drills in Your Kingston Business

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

A fire in the stairwell of a commercial building, blocking on of the exits. Fire evacuation drills in your Ulster County business should always be part of your fire safety plan!

For any Ulster County business owner, fire safety is a very important element to practice regularly. While there are plenty of things that go into running a business, all that hard work can quickly be derailed by a catastrophic event such as a fire—If  you consider that over half of businesses are never able to reopen their doors after a fire, it's crucial to prepare as much as possible.

Making sure that your staff can stay safe during an emergency should be the first priority as you
work to increase your fire preparedness. Implementing safety precautions, such as evacuation drills, can go a long way in keeping everyone informed about how to stay safe if a fire strikes during the workday.

How to Start Doing Fire Evacuation Drills At Your Business

1. Make sure you have clear fire evacuation routes. Understanding your business’ fire evacuation routes is so important when it comes to setting up your fire drills. Being certain that every area has a minimum of two exits, ensuring that fire doors are not blocked or otherwise inaccessible and putting up adequate lights and signage to show the way is the first order of business in keeping everyone safer.

2. Set a regular schedule for fire evacuation drills. Because panic can set in the moment that a
fire alarm begins to sound, hosting fire evacuation drills regularly is recommended. This way, everyone will have an understanding and be comfortable with what to do in the event of a true emergency—practice makes perfect, after all! It is recommended that you do a fire evacuation drill at least every few months.

3. Gather feedback after every drill. Soliciting feedback is an important way to improve, so be
sure to have a digest session after each drill with your staff. This way you can get any intel
regarding things that did not work or could have gone smoother. A fire drill truly is practice, so
this is a great time to iron out any kinks in a low-stakes scenario, instead of running into
difficulties during a true fire.

If you have fire damage at your business, you can count on us to help. Call our commercial damage restoration pros at any time to help get your business back on it's feet. SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz, making it "Like it never even happened," LOCALLY since 1992.

Do You Have an Emergency Kit in Your Ulster County Business?

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

An image of the interior of a commercial building hallway flooded with dirty water and debris Now is the time to plan and stock up on an emergency kit for your Ulster County business!

We know that having a well-stocked emergency kit for your family at home is important, but considering that most people spend an average of a third of their life at the office, having an emergency kit for your workplace is also extremely important. If you are a business owner, it is wise to prioritize creating and maintaining an emergency kit for your Ulster County facilities that will keep you and your staff safe in case of a disaster.

Starting and maintaining an emergency kit is something that is not terribly expensive, but it could become invaluable in case of a disaster. Being certain that you and your employees have everything you need in an emergency situation where you are trapped in the workplace for a period of time can keep people much calmer and more comfortable during a scenario where you and your staff are unable to leave. Simple items like a first aid kit, some food and water, flashlights, a radio and other items can make a huge difference.

What to Stock Up On

If you are going to stock up your office emergency kit, your goal should be to make sure your office is equipped with all the necessities so that you and your staff can survive several days without electricity, food or water in the building. While this is an extreme situation, planning ahead can truly make the biggest difference. This includes considerations for nourishment, comfort and first-aid supplies in case of injuries.

Some helpful things to include are:

  • An emergency radio so you can get important updates without electricity or cell service and extra batteries it needs.
  • A first-aid kit with all the essentials for cuts, sprains and consider how many employees you have during any given time and make sure there’s enough supplies for each in the event of a need. Consult with varying associates as well for any personal items or needs you might not have thought of.
  • Enough unopened drinking water for each person in the workplace and more for washing up.
  • Shelf-stable foods such as canned goods or granola bars
  • Flashlights, headlamps, lanterns and extra batteries that correspond to each
  • Rechargeable phone chargers
  • Paper goods like toilet paper, wet wipes, paper towels and napkins

What to Do in a Workplace Emergency

If you find yourself faced with an emergency during the workday, not panicking is the most important first step.

Be sure to listen to all emergency updates so you know whether you and your staff should evacuate immediately or stay put until the threat has passed. Be alert and aware of exits and possible obstructions or complications. Be sure you instruct everyone to do as emergency officials recommend and be certain that everyone in the building is accounted for.

The Importance of Hosting Fire Drills at Your Business | SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

A man and a woman looking at a diagram of an evacuation plan for their business with a host pointing areas out. Workplace evacuations drills are crucial no matter the type of business you have!

If you own a business in Ulster County, you are well accustomed to all the moving parts required to keep things running smoothly. From daily tasks to long-term planning, there is a lot to juggle—but it is vital that as a business owner, you do not let safety tasks such as fire drills slip through the cracks.

While fire drills are not the most enjoyable task and do not grow your business directly, they contribute significantly to the overall safety of your workplace as well as your peace of mind in the event of a problem.

Why Hosting Fire Drills at Your Business Is Important

Hosting regular fire drills at your business is a must for the safety of you as well as your employees. While no one wants to experience a fire, the National Fire Protection Association estimates that there are more than 3,000 fires in commercial spaces every year—and all it takes is one to derail your business plans and put your staff in danger.

Fires can spread within seconds, especially in commercial buildings where there is often plenty of fuel. The faster everyone can get out of the building, the quicker you can be certain that everyone is safe. Knowing that your staff has a plan of evacuation in place can relieve some of the stress should you ever have to face an event.

What to Consider When Planning Fire Drills

Utilizing Different Scenarios: Running fire drills with various scenarios is key to making sure your staff is thoroughly prepared for any situation. Fires can start for a variety of reasons and of course, in various places, so be sure to run your drill from different locations each time and utilizing real time but completely different situations (i.e. an electrical fire on the 2nd floor, a lightning strike to the building next door, a burning ashtray right outside the door, malfunctioning appliance or machines in the break room).

Prioritizing Employees With Special Needs: Not every employee will be able to execute a fire drill without assistance, so be sure you are including your employees who might need an extra hand in your plans. Pairing up employees with a buddy can be a great way to ensure everyone is equally able to get out of the building safely. Be mindful of location, distances, obstructions and time needed.

Hosting Drills on a Regular Basis: When it comes to solidifying the details of a fire drill in the minds of your staff, repetition is key. Be sure you host drills at least once every few months so everyone feels completely prepared and can memorize the plan that is in place.

If you need help with your business’ fire readiness or assistance with fire restoration, we are here to help. Get in touch 24/7 to learn more.

Natural Gas Furnace Safety Basics to Help Prevent Winter Fires at Your Ulster County Business

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

A photo of several rows of blue flames from a gas furnace lighting Extra fire safety in the winter time is a must for any Ulster County business!

Winters can be long and cold, especially in the Hudson Valley. While most businesses find themselves turning up the heat during the cold months of the year to accommodate for drafty doors and windows, it’s especially important to help keep everyone safe as well during our cold, snowy winters.

Natural gas furnaces have become more popular in recent years because they provide steady heat and can be both affordable and efficient options. Since a lot of businesses are housed in old homes and not necessarily a large commercial structure, residential gas furnace safety measures should be followed. Take care to learn the type of furnace your company or property has so you can stay ahead of the maintenance.

However, if you choose a natural gas furnace, then you’ll need to remember to take some safety precautions that aren’t necessary when using electric heating.

Making Your Property Safer with a Natural Gas Furnace

Here’s what you need to know about heating with natural gas:

Be sure you have carbon monoxide detectors installed. These inexpensive detectors are a vital safety feature for any building with natural gas heating. They detect carbon monoxide, which is odorless before it becomes dangerous to humans. Many are combination smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detector and are an efficient way cover all the bases for detection.

Keep anything flammable away from the furnace. To use your natural gas furnace safely, it needs to be clear of papers, wood, fabric and debris on all sides. Also, consider sweeping around the furnace on a regular basis, so the area stays clear. Don’t store items like paint cans and chemicals near the furnace, keep cardboard and storage boxes away and on shelves. Avoid propping up ladders, shovels and other maintenance tools on the furnace as well.

Check your filters regularly. Looking to see if your filter needs to be changed once a month is enough to make your furnace safer.

Don’t neglect regular service. Even if your furnace is working, it’s worth having a heating and air professional take a yearly look at it to let you know it’s in good shape. This is a great way to also catch issues before they become more expensive repairs.

Evacuate the building if you smell natural gas. Most people note that natural gas smells like rotten eggs. If you notice this odor, shut off your gas and leave the building. Call 911 to report it and follow their instructions for safety and the next steps. Then call to have your unit serviced and the gas leak found and repaired asap.

If you’re dealing with any type of fire, water, sewage or storm damage to your business, don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz. We’ve been the LOCAL experts in commercial property remediation for over 29 years. We’re available and here to help 24/7 for any emergency.

Think Ahead and Prepare Your Port Ewen Business for Disaster

12/16/2020 (Permalink)

a man sitting on the floor of an office on a cell phone with an orange banner above him saying "Call us." Having a plan in place for disaster recovery for your business can help you get back on your feet again efficiently and effectively!

It's vital to have an Emergency Plan in place should your business ever suffer a disaster!

Experiencing a disaster like storm damage, a fire, or a long-term, unexpected closure, as a business owner, can be a massive issue. There are so many questions about what to do and how to recover, with the priorities being to ensure everyone’s safety and if or how to continue operations as quickly as possible.

To help avoid being overwhelmed after a disaster strikes, it’s important to have a plan in place now for how you can handle a disaster that impacts your business. Planning in advance can reduce the damage a disaster causes, keep your staff safer—and most importantly, help you in reopening quicker after the danger passes.

Take a look at these strategies for success:

Reduce the Damage a Disaster Causes to Your Business

Disasters can cause major damage to businesses even when the owners do everything right. Accidents happen, weather occurs, but a little bit of planning can help reduce the losses:

-Make copies of important documents and keeping them in a secure, offsite location so you don’t lose anything critical due to flooding, fires or other scenarios.

-Creating a technology-focused disaster plan can help you protect any electronics in the workplace and recover your digital files even if your main computer systems are impacted by the disaster.

Increase the Safety of Your Workplace

All employers should have a written and tested emergency plan in place. Communicate it to staff as well, they are the best testers of an emergency plan and can offer valuable feedback. Train employees on the protocols and procedures of a disaster, as well as assigning people with roles and responsibilities. Ask them for revisions or additional input to help you execute a safe emergency evacuation. This, in turn, increases the safety of your workplace and helps ensure that everyone in the building feels prepared and understands how to be safe in extreme situations.

Decrease the Time it Takes to Reopen After a Disaster

The most important reason to prepare for a workplace disaster is helping to shorten the time it will take you to reopen. The Small Business Administration states that 25% of small businesses do not reopen following a disaster. If your business is your livelihood, that can be positively devastating. Do what you can in advance to prevent damage and have a plan in place for restoring your property and recovering following the disaster and your business can reopen quicker.

If you’re planning ahead to help protect your Ulster County business from a disaster, give SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz a call to learn more about our commercial restoration processes and how we can help you recover quickly and get your business back on it’s feet. "Like it never even happened."

How to Arm Your Ulster County Business for Quick Recovery from Water Damage

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

An image of a black computer keyboard with dirty water pouring onto it from above Prepare your business to recover quickly from water damage!

Water damage of any variety at your place of business can happen to anyone at any time. It’s rarely convenient, never at a perfect time and always tricky to determine. Water damage can be as simple as a toilet overflow, plumbing problems or an appliance malfunction but can also be as complicated as a full-on flood, a sewage back up or stemming from fire damage.

Making sure that your business is as resilient as possible to water damage is a vital way to anticipate, protect your investment and be sure you are prepared.

Ways to Lessen the Impact of Water Damage on a Commercial Level-

  1. Look into Purchasing Flood Insurance

Don’t wait until it’s too late that flood insurance is not included in their commercial policy—and depending on the extent of damages, this can be devastating. The National Flood Insurance Program set up through FEMA provides coverage to businesses to help them recover, and even if you are not in a known flood plain, it might be worth considering the addition of this to your policy just in case. If that isn’t an option for your situation, talk to your insurance agent about other ways you can amp up your business coverage in the event of a water problem.

  1. Back Up All of Your Files

Digital filing or paper filing, it’s important that you have everything essential saved in a safe and accessible spot. A sudden flood or a burst pipe can wreak havoc on both paper filing systems as well as office computer equipment and that can be impossible to recover if they become fully submerged in water. Determine the best process for your business to back up its data and keep up with this regularly to make sure you have most recent copies of everything.

  1. Get Going on a Restoration Plan

One of the best things you can do is ensure that you are able to start on the restoration process quickly is to have a plan of restoration. This will be a big help in preventing mold growth and other secondary damages from occurring. Be sure you have done your research regarding commercial restoration providers in your area and call them as fast as possible after the damage to your business and get the restoration process started right away. The quicker the better in this case. Removing water, drying out the structure and mitigating other damaged areas as soon as possible will greatly decrease the chances of secondary issues that will become far more costly to handle.

If you are ever in need of commercial restoration for water damage, we are always here to help. Our certified water damage restoration teams are on standby and ready when you need us at 845-255-4334.

We’ll help make it “Like it never even happened.”

How to Evaluate Your Disaster Preparedness as a Kingston Business Owner

10/18/2020 (Permalink)

A man's hand controlling a dial with the words "stop, start" and an arrow pointing to "disaster recovery plan." Investing in disaster preparedness for your business will allow for a smoother recovery in the event of a disaster!

Planning for all potential risks for your business is a wise undertaking for an owner, especially when planning ahead for a natural disaster. For those that are not prepared, natural disasters can be extremely detrimental, causing a loss in revenue and extensive damages to the structure.

By investing in disaster preparedness, you can set yourself up for a smooth recovery following a disaster.

Identifying all potential scenarios may seem intimidating, which is why we recommend that business owners focus on three main categories—insurance coverage, evacuation planning and a restoration plan—to make sure everything is fully considered.

Your Commercial Insurance Coverage

In the aftermath of a natural disaster, many business owners are dismayed to learn that their commercial insurance does not provide as much coverage as they thought that it might. General commercial policies are often not set up to cover the extensive damage a disaster can cause, often excluding flooding and revenue losses explicitly from what is included.

Your Emergency Plan and Supply Kit

When a natural disaster is on the way, you often will not have much time for a reaction. By planning ahead, you will know exactly what to do and can do so quickly. Consider the risks that are the most likely to impact your business, such as fire or severe weather, and tailor your plans with these in mind. Planning for evacuating quickly is crucial, but do not forget to pack an emergency kit for the event that you and your staff must stay put and await assistance.

Your Plan for Restoration and Recovery

Taking measures to reduce the time that your business is closed in a disaster’s aftermath is the best way to limit the negative impacts that it has on your business. Choose your commercial restoration company ahead of time so you can call immediately following a disaster and begin the recovery process. You may also be eligible for disaster recovery assistance thanks to the Small Business Administration, so it is worth looking into that as well.

If your business has been impacted by a disaster, you can contact us 247 for guidance on how to begin the commercial restoration process.

Winter Weather Will Be Knocking on Your Saugerties Business’s Door Before You Know It, Are You Ready?

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

A photo of a commercial plowing vehicle driving through a business parking lot on a snowy day Make sure your Ulster County business is winter-weather ready!

If you own or operate a business in Ulster County, you’ve probably learned to never underestimate the power of Mother Nature. Most of us remember one horrible winter storm after another, layers of ice that never seem to melt, deep freezes lasting for weeks on end and rock salt and puddles inside your business that you can never seem to get rid of.

Protecting and preparing your business for the winter is as vital as your home. Here are some great tips to help prepare your business for the upcoming winter:

-Check your property for downed tree limbs and branches. Any type of debris that been tossed around, signs or decorations that have become unsecured can be potentially dangerous when winds hit. Weather such as wind, rain, ice and snow can cause all sorts of things to become projectiles which could cause damage to the property and possibly a person.

-Examine the property's walkways and parking lots for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazards, trip/fall hazards like lifted concrete, potholes and cracks and make the needed repairs quickly to keep those areas free and clear (this is a good idea all year long). Adding any snow or ice to those already tricky conditions can lead to far worse and liabilities you can try to avoid.

-Inspect all handrails, doorways and frames, stairwells and entry ways to address and correct potential slippery or dangerous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present. Have this area inspected and cleaned several times a day in the snowy/icy months to avoid rock salt accumulation and hazardous puddles. Make sure any potential leak areas have the water diverted away from foot traffic spots.

-Consult a roofer for an inspection, accumulation of ice, water and snow can make for big water damage problems. You’ll want to look for leaks, tears, missing shingles or holes. Don’t forget about gutters, downspouts and roof drains, keep them free and clear of debris as well. Water damage from the roof can make for a large interruption to service if you have multiple floors of water issues.

The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it NOW.

Tips to Avoid Electrical Fires in Ulster County Businesses

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

A power strip loaded up dangerously with too many electronics plugged in to it This is a huge fire hazard that most business owners don't think about. Use safe electrical practices in your business.

Most business owners in Kingston, Highland, Saugerties and New Paltz are likely familiar with the fire codes in order to make sure their business is as safe as possible. However, outside of fire codes, there are still necessary fire safety steps to take.

If your building contains an office where many electronics are in use, educating everyone on electrical safety is a great fire prevention strategy.

Electrical Fire Safety in the Workplace

As a business owner, it’s imperative to do your part for fire safety and educating your employees so they can do the same- go hand in hand. Have your property regularly inspected by a licensed electrician and keep an eye out for areas that could use the installation of additional outlets, so you are not relying too heavily on power strips or extension cords in their place.

Additionally, the majority of electrical fire safety tips involve cord management and the safe usage of electronic devices. Here are some tips you can share with your employees to make sure they are practicing electrical safety throughout their day-to-day tasks:

  • Do not overload outlets or power strips with several electronics at one time.
  • Do NOT plug a power strip into another power strip.
  • Place all power strips in areas that are well-ventilated, in order to disperse heat.
  • Never tie knots in electrical cords.
  • Cables should never be placed under carpets or rugs in the workplace.
  • Make sure that grounded cords are not used with ungrounded outlets.
  • If a cord or cable is frayed, don’t use it
  • Always unplug cords by the plug instead of tugging the cable.
  • Don’t try to handle plugs and cables with wet hands.
  • If you see smoke or smell burning, stop using the electronic immediately, get your manager immediately, this could become a fire.
  • Alert your supervisor to any outlets that have loose-fitting plugs.
  • Extension cords are not a long-term solution. Have an electrician install another outlet if needed.

Do You Have A Disaster Plan in Place for Your Ulster County Business? Here’s Why You Should-

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

A booklet on a desk with the title "Business Continuity Plan" surrounded by a cell phone and office desk accessories You can't prepare your business too much in the event of a disaster, the more you do, the better off you'll be!

With a disaster plan in place for your business in Ulster County, it will help increase your chances of reopening quickly after an emergency- if you’re able to re-open at all.

Putting a plan in place that covers your emergency protocols from beginning to end will allow you to better prepare for any situation and make sure your business can survive even the worst of situations.

While every disaster is different, having general protocols in place you can better prepare for anything that could occur.

What to Consider When Setting Up an Emergency Plan for Your Business

-PREVENTION FIRST. While certain things like natural disasters will be out of your control, there are emergency scenarios you can prevent to some extent, including fires and some types of water damage issues. Be sure your business is up to code, conduct regular evacuation drills and have frequent seminars with your employees about workplace fire safety procedures.

-Double check and check again that your insurance is where it needs to be. Commercial insurance will often fall short in situations of emergency, which is why many business owners might want to consider purchasing coverage for specific scenarios such as flooding or an interruption in income. If there’s a sump pump in the basement, make sure you have the most up to date information regarding insurance for sump pumps.

-Keep your records safe. If your records are destroyed in a disaster, your recovery might become much more difficult than it needs to be. Protect your records by creating digital backups or storing physical papers in a secondary location so that way you do not lose everything if your business is damaged. In the event they are water damaged, SERVPRO has document drying options that can be considered.

-Keep your contact information up to date and secure. Being able to contact your employees, vendors, insurance company, tenants or landlord and other parties vital to your daily operations after a disaster is critical. Be certain you have everyone’s contact info, that it is accurate and that it is stored in a safe place. This way you and other employees can get in touch with everyone easily in case of a disaster scenario.

If your business has been impacted by a disaster or emergency, you can count on us to help. Our team of restoration experts has extensive experience with commercial properties, and we can help you at any hour.

Why You Should Prepare Your Saugerties Business for a Disaster

12/18/2019 (Permalink)

An image of a pen and an Emergency Preparedness Checklist It's crucial to have an Emergency Plan in place should your business ever suffer a disaster!

Experiencing a disaster as a business owner can be a major issue. There are so many questions about what to do and how to recover, with the priorities being to ensure everyone’s safety and to continue operations as quickly as possible.

To avoid being overwhelmed and uncertain after a disaster strikes, it’s best to have a plan in place now for how you would handle a disaster that impacts your business. Planning ahead can reduce the damage a disaster causes, keep your staff safer—and most importantly, help you reopen more quickly after the danger passes. Here’s how:

Reduce the Damage a Disaster Causes to Your Business

Disasters can cause major damage to businesses even when the owners do everything right. Accidents happen, weather occurs, but a little bit of planning can help reduce the losses:

*Make copies of important documents and keeping them in a secure, offsite location so you don’t lose anything critical due to flooding, fires or other scenarios.

*Creating a technology-focused disaster plan can help you protect any electronics in the workplace and recover your digital files even if your main computer systems are impacted by the disaster.

Increase the Safety of Your Workplace

All employers should have a written emergency plan in place and communicate it to staff as well as creating a written one even if they are not required to do so. Train employees on the protocols and procedures of a disaster, as well as assigning people with roles and responsibilities. Ask them for feedback and revisions to help you execute a safe emergency evacuation which will increase the safety of your workplace and make sure that everyone in the building feels prepared and understands how to be safe in extreme situations.

If you’re planning ahead to help protect your Saugerties or Ulster County business from a disaster, give SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz a call to learn more about our commercial restoration processes and how we can help you recover quickly.

The Business of Preparing Your Business for Flooding-SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz

10/29/2019 (Permalink)

An office space inside a commercial building in with large puddles on the floor and items in disarray after flooding. Having a flood plan in place for your commercial property is valuable no matter what!

For those who own businesses in Highland, Kingston, Saugerties, New Paltz or anywhere in Ulster County, practicing flood preparedness is a wise investment of time. The risk of flooding is underestimated, but 2018, it has been reported that the U.S suffered over $18.8 billion dollars in flood damages JUST from severe thunderstorms. Therefore, even those who do not think they would normally be at risk are wise to prepare.

Safety is the most important part of preparing for a flood, but it can also be helpful for your business continuity, too. By being prepared in a few different ways, you can work toward reopening much more quickly and getting back to business.

How Flood Preparedness Works for Businesses

Making sure your business is prepared might feel like a lot of pressure, which is why we’ve pooled some helpful tips and resources for you to access:

  • Locate your business utilizing FEMA’s Flood Map tool, which will show you your average risk and historical flooding information.
  • Take note of the list below to determine what documents would be helpful to preserve.
  • Communicate the guidelines of your official Emergency Action Plan with employees so they are educated and prepared.
  • Schedule emergency evacuation drills regularly and post maps of evacuation routes near exits.
  • Discuss your insurance coverage with your agent—many business policies require flood insurance to be an add-on. Be clear of what is and isn’t covered, don’t assume a thing!
  • Keep your emergency kit in the office fully stocked and up to date.
  • Elevate routers, servers and computers if possible before evacuation. Even a foot or 2 higher can make a big difference.

Preserving Helpful Documents

Keeping the right documents secured in an offsite location will ensure you have all the paperwork you need once the time to reopen comes. Here are some wise ones to copy, take a photo of, back up on a zip drive, etc:

  • An outline of every task that must occur for reopening to happen
  • Phone numbers of any third parties you should check in with—staff, vendors, etc.
  • Your insurance agent’s phone number, the emergency #, a copy of your policy (and flood policy, if you have it)
  • The how-to’s of recovering backed-up computer files.
  • Information about any outstanding loans, leasing agreements and other bank records
  • The contact info for a damage restoration company, SERVPRO will work directly with the insurance company to get remediation going quickly.

10/24/2019 (Permalink)

A fireman in front of a blue and white commercial building on fire Fire Prevention steps for your Ulster County commercial building is as important as fire prevention for your own home.

The best fire prevention is to be prepared and have a plan. As an owner of a building, there are numerous ways to prevent fires in your workplace. Yes, accidents occur but having plans, prevention and preparedness will help keep things running smoothly. Some involve your preparation, some need employees or staff members to assist. Having fire prevention knowledge and acting on those steps is key:

-Have an Emergency Plan: Make sure all occupants practice fire drills, know the exit routes, can operate a fire extinguisher and know who to call in an emergency.

-Have accessible equipment: fire extinguishers, sprinklers, alarms, control panels should be easily accessible.

-Get rid of hazardous materials: Flammables and combustibles need to be stored separately and disposed of properly.

-Store safe: Chemicals and other flammables should be kept in a dry, secure room with ventilation.

-Regular Maintenance: Schedule all your fire protection equipment to be inspected and maintained yearly or as often as the manufacturer advises.

-Keep It Clean: Clutter is fuel for a fire and can block escape routes. Keep the building neat and tidy.

-Invest in a Security System: Safety of the employees, peace of mind and to help protect against arson are just some of the reasons to have a system installed.

-Smoking Areas should be far away from the building: Provide plenty of ashtrays placed more than 10ft. away from the building, have them emptied often.

-Stick with OSHA and NFPA Guidelines: These agencies are the experts for rules and requirements to keep your building up to code for safety.

Accidents happen, disasters strike, things are out of our control. As an Ulster County building owner, rely on the experts at SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz to get everyone back to business quickly and safely you ever experience fire and water damage. We’re here to help 24/7 and will make it Like it never even happened.

Winter Prep Tips for your Ulster County Commercial Property

10/11/2019 (Permalink)

Water pooled in different areas on a flat commercial roof Winter readiness for your commercial property is just as important as your home!

Living in the Hudson Valley has taught us to expect the unexpected when it comes to winter weather. Protecting your business or commercial property in the cold months is just as important as what you do to prep your home.

Here are some of the useful tips we’ve gathered to help prepare your business for the upcoming winter and help give you some peace of mind:

-Check the external areas or common areas for downed tree limbs and branches.

-Inspect the walkways and parking lots for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazards, icing problems, trip/fall hazards, potholes and cracks and make repairs as needed to keep those areas free and clear (this is a good idea all year long).

-If you have a parking lot at your building, keep it free and clear of snow and ice, keep salt handy and use it often. A snow removal company is a good resource to have on hand in this case.

-Check all handrails, stairwells and entry ways and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.

-Inspect the roof for any problems that could lead to leaks and have the gutters cleaned bi-annually.

-Eliminate any drafts with caulking or weather stripping, as gaps around windows and doors run up heating bills.

-Keep vacant areas heated on a low setting, 55 degrees is ideal and will help prevent pipes from freezing. Burst pipes can have costly repercussions.

-Don’t forget about outdoor irrigation systems, these need to be winterized properly as well.

-Many building owners utilize a facilities manager or property management company to help keep an eye on and maintain things at their properties. Perhaps speak with a neighboring property owner to see what they do in this case.

-Ask SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business. It’s FREE and a great resource to have at your fingertips in case of a disaster.

The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it NOW.

If your business suffers any kind of fire, water, sewage or mold damage, we’re here to help 24/7.  We’ll get you back to business quickly, "Like it never even happened." Keep our number in your phone for emergencies, (845)255-4334.

Make Your Workplace Safety Drill Effective in 3 Steps | SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz

9/23/2019 (Permalink)

A green and white exit directional sign hanging from a ceiling in an office building Practice, revise and repeat your workplace safety drill. You can't ever be too prepared for the unexpected!

If you’re a business owner in New Paltz, Saugerties, Highland or Kingston, you understand how important it is to keep your workplace free of hazards and your employees safe from harm. However, have you considered what would happen should an emergency occur in the workplace? There are 3 significant actions you should take to make a workplace safety drill understandable and effective.

Because of how negatively a disaster can impact a small business, it is important to create a plan for what to do should an emergency occur. Creating a plan that accounts for multiple possibilities, gathering feedback and then using that feedback to improve are all important components to coming up with a fool-proof plan.

Here’s how business owners can work toward creating a workplace safety drill that works:

  1. Plan Your Drill

In order to create a effective and properly executed drill, it is important to plan it thoroughly and in advance to ensure it is as effective as possible. Be sure to plan for every scenario that could put your staff in harms’ way, such as fires, storm damage, power outages or any other emergency including those that are specific to your industry. Prepare for specific checks such as:

  • Designate a meeting point for all employees outside of and away from the building. Be clear of the location to all departments and staff.
  • Choose someone to perform a headcount and ensure that everyone in the building takes part.
  • Train some employees how to perform any emergency shutdown procedures such as turning off electric, machinery, gas or water lines before exiting the building.

It’s also important to schedule drills at various times if you have personnel who work a variety of hours or shifts so everyone can experience them. Emergencies don’t always happen from 9-5.

  1. Determine Where to Improve

After conducting a few safety drills, the most important thing to do is take note of where improvements could be made. Make sure to get feedback from employees on their suggestions or recommendations. Even things that seem small can make a large difference in an emergency scenario, such as choosing a different exit route, more lighting or better signage.

  1. Make Changes and Repeat

As important as it is to practice the drill, it’s equally as important to put any changes into effect immediately too. Notify all involved and as you continue to make improvements and run drills, it is important to note how more recent drills compare with earlier ones. Tracking the improvements and results of each round is a great way to ensure that drills are as efficient as they can be, that way everyone will stay safe should a real emergency occur.

It’s highly recommended that you document and keep these practices in a safe and easily obtainable location. In an emergency, it’s hard to remember exactly what you’ve been told, having it on paper and handy to all makes for a less-stressful situation for all involved.

SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz has experts in damage restoration and can help you plan for emergencies with our FREE Emergency Ready Profile! It’s simple, effective and highly useful tool for all business owners. Give us a call today to learn more.

Any kind of disaster and sustaining property damage is devastating for anyone. Business owners are put in an especially precarious situation as their livelihood and their employees are at risk. An astonishing fact: Over 40% of businesses don’t reopen after a disaster.

It’s important for business owners to work with a restoration company they trust. One with local, reliable and trust-worthy business practices. Here are some questions to ask to ensure you are picking the right remediation company:

  1. How fast Can They Get to You?

Damage can get out of hand quickly if left untreated, so a quick response is mandatory. Get information about their emergency response procedures and hours of operation to understand what to expect.

SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz offers a faster response time with our emergency line, staffed 24 hours a day. This allows us to quickly respond when a disaster is called in so business owners can use their time on other disaster recovery tasks.

  1. How Does the Company Train Their Technicians?

Consistent training is vital to ensuring the technicians’ work is of a high caliber, so customers should always inquire about the company’s education and certification standards. Knowing your business is in good hands will provide peace of mind and ensure the work is done properly.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets forth the most comprehensive standards in the industry, and that is what SERVPRO bases our technicians’ education off of. From their initial training to e-learning and new certification opportunities, we ensure they are always learning whether it be in the field or in private instruction.

  1. Ask What Their Equipment Lineup Is Like?

Technology has truly revolutionized restoration equipment, so maintaining an up-to-date fleet of equipment is vital to performing a highest caliber of work. A company’s fleet of tools and equipment needs to be modernized and updated consistently, so you can be sure the best and most current technology is being used at your business.

SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz chooses our own equipment based on the IICRC guidelines, which guarantees that we are utilizing the industry standard. Whether removing water damage or scrubbing the air of soot particles, you can rest assured that you have made the right choice for your business.

Making an Emergency Plan for Your Business | SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

An Emergency Plan for your business is key for safety and preparedness.

When it comes to emergency preparedness for your business, making a plan is one of the best things you can do. Not only will having one help to keep your staff safe and informed, but it will also help you as a business owner reopen more quickly following a disaster.

A comprehensive emergency plan should be thorough, include information to share with employees and include all the materials you need to get the business reopened in the disaster’s wake. Here is a three-step guide to making your business emergency plan:

  1. Determine the Most Likely Threats

The first thing to do to prepare your business for an emergency is to understand what types of damages you might be likely to face. If your business is prone to flooding, or if you have a restaurant and are thus more likely to have a fire, these are factors you should consider when making your plan. It is also essential to plan for natural disasters, such as storm damage, fire from lightning strikes or any other severe weather that could cause harm.

  1. Create an Emergency Response Plan & Share it With Employees

The most beneficial aspect of a disaster plan is that everyone should automatically know what to do if an emergency occurs. Create a plan so employees are aware of where they should go, who they should check in with and what next steps are in all the scenarios you outlined in the step above.

Tip: Schedule workplace emergency drills so employees can rehearse the actions they will take in the case of a real scenario.

  1. Determine How You Will Get Back to Business

Workplace emergencies can have a big impact on a business, even forcing them to close in almost half of reported cases. It is important to plan how you will get back to business following a disaster by creating a thorough business recovery plan. This should cover topics such as staffing issues, equipment failures and what commercial restoration company to work with to remediate the damages done.

If your business has been hit with emergency damage, we can help! We are fully certified in commercial restoration and can respond quickly when you call. Get in touch today to make us part of your emergency response plan!

Ensuring Sure Your Business Is Ready for Any Potential Disaster Situations | SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz

5/9/2019 (Permalink)

It's never too early or late to create a plan for your Ulster County business in case of any type of emergency or disaster!

As a business owner, you shoulder many responsibilities where the business and your employees are concerned, but one of the most important responsibilities to consider is emergency preparedness. Kingston, Highland, Saugerties, Esopus and New Paltz businesses have dealt with plenty of emergencies in the past, so here's a little help going forward-

While putting an emergency preparedness plan in place does not give you a guarantee that a disaster will not happen, it can still give your business a leg up on the safety side, making sure that your employees know what to do if a disaster or emergency situation should occur.

Making a Plan

Have you taken the time to sit down and work out this all-important emergency preparedness plan for various disaster situations? It's time to make it a priority!

There are numerous emergencies your business should have a preparedness plan in place for, including:

  • Fire and Natural Gas emergencies
  • Severe weather, including thunderstorms and winter storms
  • Other natural hazards like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes
  • Human-caused hazards, including accidents or acts of violence
  • Technology-related issues like power outages and equipment failure

Hopefully, your business or employees never have to deal with either a man-made incident or a natural disaster, but if there is no emergency plan for your business, things could become extremely difficult quickly.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure that safety training and familiarization of emergency preparedness plans are included in the company on boarding process, team-building activities and continuing education opportunities. By helping employees familiarize themselves with proper safety protocol and emergency procedures, you’re not only giving them the tools to protect themselves, but you are also setting them up to help protect clients, guests, visitors, and the business itself.

Where to Start

When beginning to set up an emergency plan for your business, stop and do an evaluation about the possible scenarios that could most likely occur—and even those that are a long shot but could still happen. After all, it’s better to prepare for all the worst-case scenarios and not be caught off guard.

There are plenty of online resources to help guide you through this process, including Ready.gov, the American Red Cross, FEMA and the CDC. There are also private companies that specialize in these types of scenarios.

You should also do a business impact analysis (BIA) to help predict the potential effect a disaster may have on your business. This would include lost or delayed sales and income, increased expenses from repairs, and delayed implementation of business plans. Don’t forget to make sure a crisis communications plan is in place, too.

Practice makes perfect, so once you have come up with an emergency preparedness plan, be sure to go over it and practice with employees. Reviewing and rehearsing various scenarios can help ensure the process remains fresh in their minds and can help employees feel more empowered.

Disaster can strike when you least expect it, but by being prepared and having a plan in place, your business will be better suited to handle whatever Mother Nature has in store. If the worst should happen and your business is damaged, know that SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz is here to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us 24/7 at (845)255-4334.

When dealing with large commercial properties in Kingston/New Paltz....

4/9/2019 (Permalink)

This Desiccant Dehumidifier can make easy work of drying out a large amount of space.

No matter what kind of damage your Kingston/New Paltz commercial building has suffered how overwhelming it might feel, here's a peek into how we handle the loss so you can go right back to business.

When you have a large loss, you break out the juggernaut to help get it dry. This mammoth machine is a Desiccant Dehumidifier.
A desiccant dehumidifier has a moisture absorbing wheel inside the unit that is made of silica gel – which is the desiccant (drying) element. Air enters the unit through an opening and travels through the silica gel wheel. When the air reaches the other side of the wheel it is dry and pushed out of the unit by a high static blower.

No matter the size of the disaster, having machines and equipment like this at our fingertips is crucial to taking care of it the right way quickly and efficiently with minimal business downtime. Call SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz for any of your commercial property cleanups

Protecting Your Business From Fire Risks | SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

Do you have a fire plan in place for your business?

Safety for your employees and visitors is just one of the factors business owners need to consider. If you are a business owner, one risk you will need to spend some time planning for and working toward preventing is a fire.

Leading Causes of Commercial Structure Fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the leading causes of structure fires in office properties from 2007–2011 were (in order):

  1. Cooking equipment, 29% of fires
  2. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment, 12% of fires
  3. Heating equipment, 11% of fires
  4. Intentional, 10% of fires
  5. Smoking materials, 9% of fires
  6. Exposure, 4% of fires
  7. Electronic, office or entertainment equipment, 3% of fires

Of those causes, intentional, exposure, and electrical distribution and lighting equipment accounted for the most property damage with 20%, 18% and 15% respectively.

It was reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that in 2007, fires and explosions accounted for 3% of all workplace fatalities.

Looking at more recent numbers, the NFPA estimates that from 2007–2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,340 fires in office properties per year, which resulted in an annual average of four deaths, 44 injuries and $112 million in direct property damage.

Protecting Your Business

By focusing on fire risk assessment, fire prevention and staff education, there are steps you can take to protect your business and help reduce the chance of a fire breaking out.

First, make an assessment of any fire hazard risks in your facility. In some locations, your local government may have a fire marshal that can visit your establishment to help identify these risks and provide guidance on your fire prevention plan.

You’ll want to make sure that the right fire protection equipment is in place. This includes an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on each floor.

Finally, you must consider the safety of your employees and visitors. By creating a fire plan and regularly reviewing it with your staff, you’ll ensure that everyone knows what to do in the case of a fire. To keep fire safety procedures fresh in everyone’s mind, conduct fire drills at least once a year, and take time to review evacuation routes and the locations of your first-aid kits.

Despite best efforts with fire prevention and safety tips, the worst could always happen at your business. If a fire has damaged your business, SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz is available to help make it "Like it never even happened." Store our number in your phone, 845-255-4334.

Have You Created a Disaster Plan for Your Business? | SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz

1/11/2019 (Permalink)

You'll be able to roll with the punches by creating a disaster plan for your business.

Everything from floods, hurricanes and tornadoes to wildfires and hurricanes are in the news almost daily, proving Mother Nature is a force to be reckoned with. In the event your business should fall victim to one of these, the key to being able to roll with the punches, so to speak, is being prepared in advance for a multitude of worst-case scenarios.

Preparation for those scenarios involves creating a natural disaster plan for your business. Let’s take a look in this blog at some aspects to consider when designing that plan.

Disaster Planning Basics

So, what exactly will you need to consider when designing a disaster plan for your business? There are many factors to include from employees to your equipment and assets.

Considerations to include should be:

  1. Providing protection for your employees
  2. Safely securing your assets
  3. Getting your business up and running again

There have been many checklists made available to us by sources like the Red Cross, FEMA and Ready.gov that will assist you identifying areas that need to be included in your natural disaster preparedness plan. These sources will also help you see just how prepared you truly are.

Safety for Employees and Visitors

If a disaster were to strike without warning, a plan needs to be in place that lists procedures and safety measures for employees and visitors to follow.

Make sure evacuation routes and exits from your facility are all clearly marked, mark a shelter space within the building for people to use as a shelter, consider installing emergency lighting, and have designated volunteer “safety wardens” who are properly trained and ready to guide and assist with all emergency efforts.

When you are looking for a shelter space, ideally a basement or storm cellar is where it should be in case of tornadoes or other high-wind situations. If you have no basement space, select a small interior room, closet or interior hallway on the lowest level of the building.

Ways to Protect Your Assets

If the business is located in a brick and mortar location, you’ll have to make educated choices about protecting the assets inside it. There are thousands of dollars of equipment and merchandise at risk when a natural disaster strikes.

Do you have a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of your equipment and merchandise or perhaps photographs taken prior to a disaster whenever possible? This is always helpful if insurance claims will have to be made. If you use a computer server to store assets, take steps necessary to ensure that the backup system completes regular backups and that the storage system cannot be damaged.

If you own your building, you can ask a contractor to help you identify areas where the structural integrity may need improving. The contractor can walk you through possible safety upgrades and advise on any areas that may not stand up to certain weather situations.

Getting Back to Business Quicker

When a natural disaster does occur, it is possible that your business will have to be closed due to damage. Each day you remain closed is another day of lost profits. It is wise to have a “disaster” fund set aside to cover any additional costs that are not covered by your insurance.

Establish relationships with contractors who would be available for construction concerns, and know who to call for cleanup and restoration services that will be available to quickly respond to your emergency situation.

With SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz, you can count on us to get to the disaster faster and make it "Like it never even happened." Our training and expertise have prepared us to help with water damage, storm damage, fire damage and mold remediation quickly and effectively.

Knowing what to do when disaster strikes your business is of the utmost importance. When it comes to the cleanup and restoration aspects, depend on SERVPRO® of Kingston/New Paltz to be there for you. Call us no matter the emergency, we're here 24/7 at 845-255-4334.

Helpful tips for preparing your Kingston/New Paltz business for Winter Weather

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

This is the last sign you want your clients to see at your business. Protect your investment!

Living in the Hudson Valley has taught us to never underestimate the power of Mother Nature. Most of us remember one horrible winter storm after another or deep freezes lasting for weeks on end.

Protecting your business in the winter months is as vital as your home. Here are some great tips to help prepare your business for the upcoming winter and give you some piece of mind.

-Check your commercial property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather such as wind, rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.

-Inspect your property's walkways and parking lots for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazards, trip/fall hazards, potholes and cracks and repairs needed to keep those areas free and clear (this is a good idea all year long).

-Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entry ways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.

The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it NOW.

-Ask SERVPRO of Kingston/New Paltz about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business. Call us today at 845-255-4334.

Equipment Spotlight: Desiccant Dehumidifier

1/12/2016 (Permalink)

A desiccant dehumidifier on a Large Loss job.

A desiccant dehumidifier has a moisture absorbing wheel inside the unit. The wheel is made of silica gel – which is the desiccant (drying) element. Air enters the unit through an opening and travels through the silica gel impregnated wheel. When the air reaches the other side of the wheel it is dry and pushed out of the unit by a high static blower.
